Shared costs

Sites that carry the clean-up together

One site alone is often too small for a carbon project, a microbe lab or a drone team: most of the cost is fixed. Sites that share a problem (one catchment, one polluted river, one smelter zone) can share the solution and the bill. This page shows which sites belong together and how much that saves.

How the clusters are made

  1. Footprints of mined land (Cheng et al. 2026) within 400 m of each other become one site; permits are overlaid to see who has a legal reclamation duty.
  2. A site gets problem labels from facts we have (gold and no permit: mercury; nickel: Cr(VI) and sediment; inside a Sentinel-5P zone: NO₂; hectares in the same HydroBASINS catchment: shared river).
  3. Per solution, sites are grouped only when they really can share it: the same island, the same catchment for water, the same NO₂ zone for e-trucks, within the road distance the solution allows.
  4. The cost is split with the Shapley value and checked: no site pays more than alone and no sub-group would be better off alone.

  • Electric ore haulage

Footprints: Cheng et al. 2026. Permits: ESDM Minerba register. Rivers and catchments: HydroSHEDS (Lehner and Grill 2013). NO₂: Sentinel-5P. Plants: Global Energy Monitor. Prices: working assumptions, see each cluster.

Data grade: A measured or official, B derived from a public source, C estimate with a source, D working assumption.
